Germany's Adler, Rolfes to miss World Cup

05/04/2010 -
Berlin, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Germany coach Joachim Loew learned Tuesday
that No. 1 goalie Rene Adler and midfielder Simon Rolfes will miss the World
Cup because of injury.
Adler broke a rib playing for Bayer Leverkusen in April, and initially planned
to play through the injury but informed Loew on Tuesday that will have surgery
and miss next month's tournament in South Africa.
"It was the most difficult decision of my life," Adler said on the Bundesliga
website, "but it would have been irresponsible of me towards myself, my club
and the national team to have taken part in the World Cup."
Adler was cleared to play for Leverkusen last weekend, but following the match
against Hertha Berlin knew he wasn't healthy enough to finish the Bundesliga
season or play in the World Cup.
"Technically it would be possible, but the pain is substantial enough to
prevent me from delivering my best form over the course of the tournament. ...
you need to have players at peak fitness," Adler said.
Loew will name his new top goalkeeper, likely either Schalke's Manuel Neuer or
Werder Bremen's Tim Wiese, on Thursday when he releases his preliminary roster
for the World Cup.
"We found out this morning. Of course we're very sorry that Rene will have to
undergo surgery and miss out on the World Cup," Loew said on the Bundesliga
website. "We'll have to discuss who we take as a replacement and announce our
decision at the press conference on Thursday."
Rolfes, who also plays at Bayer Leverkusen, injured his right knee in January
and was on crutches for eight weeks. He will only begin jogging in mid-May and
also informed Loew on Tuesday he would not be fit in time for the World Cup.
"I'm very pleased with the way my rehabilitation has gone," Rolfes, who has
played 21 times for Germany, said on the Bundesliga website. "Unfortunately
with the current situation, it wouldn't make sense for me to go to the World
Cup.
"Not going to the World Cup is difficult for me to swallow, but all I can do
is wish the team all the best in South Africa."
Loew announced Monday he would not name Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi to team,
even though he's scored 18 goals in the Bundesliga this season. Kuranyi hasn't
played for Germany since leaving the stadium during a match against Russia in
2008 when he was not included on that day's roster.
