06/12/2010 -
Santiago, Chile (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fernando Gonzalez of Chile will be
sidelined until August because of a knee injury.
Gonzalez said he is taking the next 10 weeks off after being diagnosed with
bilateral patellar tendinitis. He hopes to return for the start of Rogers Cup
in Toronto, which starts August 9.
"I will have to skip Gstaad, Bastad, Hamburg and, most sadly, the Davis Cup
quarterfinal tie against Czech Republic at Coquimbo," Gonzalez said on his
personal website. "The treatment I'm receiving makes me stop for a long time.
If I come back for Davis Cup it would make the injury get worse and I wouldn't
even be at 50 percent for those matches. I feel really bad about not playing
the competition I like the most. I wish things were different, but they
aren't. If everything turns out as I hope, my return tournament will be at
Masters 1000 Toronto."
Gonzalez is currently ranked 21st in the world after previously reaching as
high No. 5 in 2007. He has played a limited schedule this year, in part to
help with recovery efforts in the wake of the February earthquake in Chile.
The 29-year-old veteran has a match record of just 15-7 this year, reaching
semifinals in Santiago and Acapulco in early February. He lost to Andy Roddick
in the fourth round at the Australian Open and was a second-round loser to
Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine at the French Open.
Gonzalez has 11 career ATP titles and was the runner-up to Roger Federer at
the 2007 Australian Open for his best Grand Slam finish.
