Devils, Kovalchuk finally seal the deal Tue Sep  7 15:40:30 2010 EST
ts is not worthy of taking up $6.6 million of space on the salary cap every year. While I can see how Kovalchuk's postseason disappointments are an issue, it all seems to be blown out of proportion. Like his countryman Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, Kovalchuk has been pegged as a highly-skilled offensive player who wilts under the pressure of the postseason. That categorization is unfair in both cases because it commits the cardinal sin of boiling down a team's successes to a single

not translate to the playoffs, as they fell in the conference semifinals for the second time in the last three years. Putting the puck in the net was the least of the Canucks' worries, as the team finished with a second-place finish to the Washington Capitals in goals scored. The problem was a defense that allowed three goals or more in 15 of the final 21 regular season games. Since Vancouver did not employ a shutdown defenseman after Willie Mitchell was lost in mid-January, the likes of Shane

nadian matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames. The game is scheduled for February 20 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, and will be the first outdoor NHL game in Canada since the 2003 Heritage Classic between the Canadiens and Oilers that was contested at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. The 2011 Winter Classic, the league's premier outdoor event, will be held at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field on New Year's Day, featuring the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. More to follow.

controversial. If you've watched a lot of post-game NHL interviews, it wouldn't surprise you that hockey players are the most restrained of all the major sports. So, when Talbot went on a Pittsburgh radio show on Tuesday morning and called Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin a word that is most accurately used to describe a feminine hygiene product, like it or not, I bet it grabbed your attention. And the fact that the insult was hurled just hours before Talbot represented the Penguins

Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals inked forward Tomas Fleischmann to a one-year contract on Tuesday. The 26-year-old native of the Czech Republic notched career-highs with 23 goals, 28 assists and 51 points in 69 games for the Capitals last season. His regular season was cut short in March due to deep vein thrombosis in one of his legs. A former second-round draft pick of Detroit in 2002, Fleischmann came to Washington in a February, 2004 deal for Robert Lang. In 260 NHL
Crafty Yzerman making his mark with Lightning Tue Jul 20 13:06:32 2010 EST
for the fewest points in the NHL in 2007-08 and eight points out of a playoff spot last year, Yzerman has turned his franchise into a club that has enough talent to end a three-season playoff drought and maybe even challenge the powerhouse Washington Capitals for bragging rights in the Southeast Division. Even with all of the moves Yzerman has made since becoming GM, his best might have come on Monday when the Lightning pulled the trigger on a trade with the Flyers that brought two-time 40-goal
Habs appoint Carriere assistant GM Fri Jul 16 19:11:25 2010 EST
Montreal, Quebec (Sports Network) - The Montreal Canadiens announced on Friday the appointment of Larry Carriere to assistant general manager and director of player personnel. Carriere, a Montreal native, had been a pro scout for the Washington Capitals since 2004. His tenure culminated in the parent club winning the President's Cup last season, while the Capitals' AHL affiliate in Hershey won the last of its three Calder Cup championships during Carriere's run. "We are extremely happy to annou

last season. He has 18 goals and 37 points in 150 career games with Minnesota and New York. Hillier has yet to play in the NHL. The Rangers, meanwhile, will be Eminger's sixth team since he concluded the 2007-08 campaign as a member of the Washington Capitals, who used the 12th overall pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft on the Ontario native. Eminger split the following season with three clubs (Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Florida) before signing with the Ducks last September. He finished with fou
